How is Chinese Massage/Tuina Different?

Chinese Massage, also known as Tuina or acupressure, is a type of Chinese therapeutic massage and is an important component in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

In China, it shares the same eminence as acupuncture, herbal medicine and other Chinese medical treatments. Tuina evolved to treat paediatric problems before western medicine was introduced in China so that the younger children had an alternative to drinking Chinese herbs or being treated with acupuncture needles.

It was also designed to treat conditions that, in western medicine, usually require a physiotherapist, chiropractor or an osteopath. Unlike western manual therapists who usually specialise in a single technique, Tuina uses a complex manipulation system that is inclusive of all osteopathic joint movements, chiropractic correction and deep tissue strokes as well as a distinctive Tuina technique.

Tuina therapists require extensive training in their field that covers a wide range of specialities outside of massage including exercise and management of diet and lifestyle.

Which Conditions are Helped by Tuina/Acupressure Techniques?

Tuina is commonly used in combination with acupuncture to assist that method of treatment. Muscles, tendons and other soft tissue components are massaged according to acupressure techniques to manipulate and realign the musculoskeletal and ligament connections.

Chinese massage has also been used to treat sporting injuries, tendonitis, muscular problems, stress-related problems, asthma, arthritis, high blood pressure, children’s health problems, birth induction, menstrual pain, gynaecological problems, headaches, allergies, hay fever and internal medical problems such as post-stroke paralysis.

How Does It Work?

Chinese massage works on the muscles, bones and joints, as well as working with the deeper energy of the body through the manipulation of the flow of qi via acupressure points and energy pathways throughout the body.

Tuina was one of the earliest methods of treating illness used in ancient China, designed to prevent problems by keeping the body’s energy in balance and maintaining health. It has since undergone thousands of years of practice and development, resulting in a discipline that is unique and comprehensive and which aligns its theory with practice.

Tuina works on acupuncture points, focusing on nerve activity in the same way as acupuncture to enhance blood circulation and to correct abnormal anatomical changes as well as to relax muscles
