Moxibustion Therapy

What Is Moxibustion?

Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese Medicine technique that involves burning mugwort, a type of small spongy herb, to facilitate healing. It produces a heating sensation that penetrates deep into the skin, warming muscles and relaxing the body.

How Does It Work?

There are two main types of Moxibustion: direct and indirect.

Direct Moxibustion is used much lesser nowadays though it is still being practised in some cities in China and overseas. This method is not common anymore in most places.

Regarding Indirect Moxibustion, the process includes a practitioner to light one end of a moxa stick (roughly the size and shape of a cigar) and holds it close to the area being treated, until the area feels warm sensations and/or turns red. Another form of indirect Moxibustion involves a combination of acupuncture and indirect Moxibustion, whereby a needle inserted into an acupoint is wrapped in moxa and ignited, generating heat into the point and the surrounding area. After the desired effect is achieved, the moxa is extinguished and the needle is removed.

Benefits

Moxibustion has an even longer history than acupuncture and is also based on the acupuncture meridian theory. But moxibustion therapy utilises warm sensations to the treated area in order to provide support of energy flow.

In Chinese Medicine theory, moxibustion therapy balances Yang deficiency, internal cold and insufficient energy flow when it is performed along acupuncture and massage therapies.
