The 5 Efficacies of Acupuncture
People come into the clinic with different levels of expectation for what they would like to get out of their acupuncture treatment and how to make the most out of the essential relationship between client and practitioner. These levels can also represent different stages of a client’s health journey, as overtime they can develop a deeper understanding about Traditional Chinese medicine and how this holistic approach impacts their path to better balance, health, and wellbeing.
Level 1: Problem-Solving Mindset
This is the base entry level for clients coming into the clinic. Usually people come into the clinic for acupuncture services to ‘problem solve’ their symptoms. So, they have the expectation when they come in that they have a problem that needs to be fixed, and expect that a practitioner can find an immediate solution. This is a common mindset that people have, and this problem thinking is a way for the mind to focus on a problem, symptom, or issue they may have and start connecting the problem to underlying issues or causes. This is actually beneficial as an initial step, as when working with a practitioner, the client becomes involved in their own healing process and begins to learn and become open to holistic treatment.
Level 2: Opening to Holistic Understanding
This level describes clients who come into the clinic for treatment, but are also open to have conversations or discussions to understand their unique health situation, and to not just treat the problem, but actually understand the journey. This involves developing self-awareness, and beginning to consider their individual balance and energy flow, and accept their current condition, including any issues they may have. These clients are aware that their issue or problem isn’t just in one specific area, but instead that the energy is throughout their whole body, and is just presented in that location of the body. There is a bigger picture and an overall understanding of health that needs to be considered before the specific problem can gradually dissolve with the proper healing approach, treating the body holistically. From there the client can lower their expectations about the healing process, and practise patience. This can reduce the desire to rush the healing journey and health process, which would only increase stress, limit comfort, and prevent a greater body balance from being found.
Level 3: Active Engagement and Mindful Participation
This level includes people who go along with acupuncture, take in the explanation, are willing to further understand and learn, and begin to form a greater understanding of the effectiveness of acupuncture. With this they can explore integrating breathing techniques and imagination visualisation into their acupuncture, whilst simultaneously following proper instructions or advice from practitioners. This category also includes people who come to receive acupuncture and bring their own knowledge of Traditional Chinese medicine, which can contribute to the overall acupuncture treatment. This creates a level of mindfulness throughout the process and leads to double efficacy of acupuncture as the client can also gain an understanding of the practitioner's methods and support. In the meantime the clients themselves can initiate conversations, and come together with the practitioner to better improve upon their overall healing.
Level 4: Integration with Lifestyle and Context
This level involves the clients who love to learn, have become used to regular acupuncture, and understand how the acupuncture and healing process works. These clients also have a base level understanding of the holistic approach and are aware of how the treatment should be conducted, and how this can be affected by the time of day, the season, and any personal conditions, such as how their type of job affects their daily movement (e.g. sedentary office jobs). These aspects affect the body differently and serve as the context for the treatment, and inform how it is conducted. Some clients can also already be aware of how having certain medical conditions or issues can affect when it is best for acupuncture to be experienced. It is through these understandings that the client and the practitioner can become on the same page, and work even more organically and productively. Through this relationship, the communication and understanding is at quite a high level, improving the effectiveness of the acupuncture treatment.
Level 5: Alignment of Internal and External Power
This level is the highest stage of a client’s health journey, whereby clients are actively engaging with their practitioner, and passionate about their healing and wellbeing process. They apply the principle of balance, and in every moment the client considers the contribution of balance to their overall healing experience. Whilst receiving acupuncture treatment, the client can appreciate their own knowledge, experience, and memory, and let their internal power and thoughts release throughout the treatment. At the same time, the practitioner focuses on the external power through the physical therapy of acupuncture. The internal and external forces have a meeting point in certain parts of the body, and if this occurs, the energy flow throughout the body has a lasting effect. This level of efficacy within acupuncture treatment indicates a long-term client that has worked through many healing and Traditional Chinese medicine experiences, and is open and aware of how to approach their healing more effectively. These people are often quite interested in the theory and practice of the treatment, not merely just trying to solve a specific problem within their body. They utilize their memory, experience, initiative, and way of thinking in approaching the method of the acupuncture treatment, making a difference to the personality and effectiveness of the acupuncture.
Final Thoughts
These five levels don’t rank clients by importance—they simply reflect different stages of awareness and engagement. Whether someone is new to acupuncture or years into their journey, every level plays a role in the holistic healing process.
The beauty of Traditional Chinese Medicine lies in its adaptability: it meets people where they are, and invites them—over time—to go deeper, with greater presence, understanding, and trust in their body’s natural balance.
